The Ups and Downs of RP on SL.

SL is a game, we all know that. But most see it as a really detailed visual instant messenger. It's mostly a social network. Sort of like MSN Messenger with cool looking simslike people to look at.

But there are many who have in fact turned SL into a proper game, as there are hundreds literally of Role-Playing sims, in various settings, where people go to dress up, become someone or something else, and weave interactive stories or do valiant battle.

Roleplaying is big business on SL. In fact the CCS, or Community Combat System, is actually going to be integrated partially into SL itself so players can have their stats in their title windows. RP sims tend to make decent money in rentals if they're done well and run well.

There are 6 major RP systems used on SL, though I'm sure there are lesser ones in use here and there. The above mentioned CCS is the most predominant, being used in well over 300 different sims, and keeps it's creators very comfortable financially as one must pay rent on a ccs server placed on their sim. CCS sims generally tend to be set in post-apocalyptic worlds where vampires and werewolves struggle for power, though a few such as Silverleaf or Crossroads have adopted a medieval setting. CCS started in a single rp sim called the City of Lost Angels not long after SL itself was launched, and has grown exponentially, remaining one of the few stable economies within SL. It;s an experience based system that allows you to choose race and class on the cola website, and level up like in a normal rpg.

Next up are DCS and WARPS. WARPS is popular and common but I've never played on a WARPS based sim nor did I have time to research, but if this article is well-received I'll do a full series of rp articles and research WARPS for it. DCS on the other hand I have played in, mostly on Little Mos Eisley, a Star Wars based rp sim. DCS, or Dynamic Combat System, is similar to CCS but not as full featured. The system is customizable by sim owners to give skills sim specific names, such as Force Heal, and you gain xp and level up as in CCS, but your race and class options tend to be very limited. DCS Sims vary in settings much more than CCS sims do, ranging from Sci-Fi like Star Wars to D&D type fantasy to post-apocalyptic.

On the next Tier down are Bloodlines, Spellfire, and Gor. Bloodlines is purely Vampire based rp, and like WARPS I haven't had time to explore it but will for future articles. Gor I'm completely disgusted by, but thankfully our own gorgeous and deliscious Joan Sweetwater covered that base for me in recent articles here on SLN. So that leaves Spellfire. Spellfire is probably the simplest rp system on SL, and mostly popular on D&D fantasy styled sims like the Realm of Terabithia.

Spellfire is simple, you choose a race, and it sets your stats. Easy-peasy. No levelling up is involved, no servers need to be rezzed on a sim, no websites to set up a character. Just set your race and go. Spellfire races range in the fantasy gamut, like elves, fae (fairies), humans, goblins, orcs, drow (dark elves), dragons and centaurs.

So what's the catch to all this fun? Same catch as everything else online or on SL; assholes. RP sims, while mostly populated by cool people who just want to share a story and pretend, have the nasty habit of attracting bullies and assholes, who like the ability to use scripted weapons to kill other players and the chance to use an evil character as an excuse. I've personally dubbed this kind of RP'er a Sparmonkey, a term I'm pleased to know is spreading. Basically meaning someone whose sole rp goal is to spar, fight maim, kill, capture or rp rape, and who do very little actual rp to justify it beyond "Oh my character is a jerk, I'm just rp'ing my character by raping and murdering you". On CCS there are entire clans of players like this, such as the Hell Vikings or Orange Crush.

Fortunately the good players outnumber the assholes, and there are so many sims and styles to choose from that the asshats can be avoided easily enough. And it's pretty much a universal rule that no matter what sim or system you're playing on, if someone forces an rp on you that you aren't comfortable with you can redlight it, and erase it from continuity, most often called a Fade To Black.

Some of these sims have devoted a lot of work into some truly beautiful builds, such as the 12th Dimension Castle in the sim Folkvang, or the Drow Underdark in Lizzy Leominster's Thralldom sim. And many have spent a great deal of time creating deep nuanced backstories for the sim. Many players write extensive bios for their characters, creating full vivid histories.

If you're new to RP there are some sims you should probably avoid, either because they're poorly managed or because the GM's (General Moderators) or Admins don't pay enough attention to thug players' behaviour, and a noob rp'er will get eaten alive. The City of Carpathia is among the worst run sims in CCS with a high player turnover due to poor management and free roaming bullies. Another sim, Cathage, has attentive GM's but very liberal rules about what kind of rp is okay, and rape rp is commonplace in Carthage and may be too much for new players to cope with. Malka is a fun sim but is populated mostly by players portraying Malkavian Vampires, known for being unpredictable and insane, and many new players there may find themselves killed for insane reasons. I was once killed there because my shadow was making fun of my killer.

In the end, if you're into roleplaying, SL has a rich and varied tapestry of choices for you, all with their ups and downs. Explore them and see if you feel right with elf ears and a tail, questing to kill the drow who murdered your sister in cold blood lo so many years ago.

Just have a decent cashflow, the best rp gear can get pretty pricey.

We now return you to whichever life you're living.

Its a 'Mystery'

I was invited to a dance party in the Mystery sim a few weeks ago. It is always a pleasure to be in that sim. This time I was introduced to the visionary creators of this magnificent place. Amythe Moonlight and Ayjay Carpenter.
They were commissioned by Tygeria Mirabeau, the owner of the sim to do a project.
That project continued and developed into more and more until it became a whole new creation.
Amythe offered to take me on a tour to show all their work.
We visited the English village that was moved to the mystery sim after they were invited to move there and continue work on the sim, now Mystery is part of their souls.
The shops and and contents come out of their imaginations
You can find art works and practical furniture for you home and fashions for your avatar all made by these amazing people. Amythe visualizes role playing there sometime in the future. “Imagine shopkeepers in every shop and people walking around the streets chattering and talking buying items and working.“
Amythe told me they have many changes in mind to make the mystery sim more fun than ever! It is a seasonal sim so is in constant flux. Amythe and Ayjay have a business besides maintaining and enhancing Mystery sim. We visited the gallery where art treasures are mounted on the walls along the corridors.
Right now there is a spring bazaar going on in the gallery.
The name of their joint venture is Moonlight Holdings.
We flew off the sim to see some of their other creations. Bears and Stuff is their shop filled with wonderful bears with large and small, in all colors, chatty bears, hobby bears and more. If you cannot find one to fit your need you can have one custom made. Cute mantle clock and other décor lined the shelves. As we talked I was more and more amazed at the extent of their work!
We walked across the way where Ayjay has Dancing in the Stars with club items for sale. A DJ Battle machine caught my eye. It makes it easy for DJ’s to switch without a pause in the music.
I asked how they came to be in business and Ayjay told me they just ”bumped” into each other and Amythe explained she came to S
L with some excitement about learning to build and create things of beauty .You will see some her 3D animated art in the gallery and also in the village, Ayjay came to sl later and met Amythe . He began to watch her create and wanted to learn although he had experience in 3D modeling in rl this was building was new to him. She began to teach him to build and gradually they put their ideas together and worked jointly.
Their original gallery was born out of that period and also a garden, followed by the English village. Ayjay was very knowledgeable of programming language in rl and so became a master scripter in sl. As Amythe builds the bears, for example, he does the scripts, he is also a landscape artist in as you will see as you explore Mystery.
Amythe said of Tigeria and their continued success ,”Without Tigeria’s influence we wouldn’t be doing what we do today . She has been an inspiration to both of us.“
If you have not been to Mystery sim yet make sure you visit now, and then again and again because you will love what is there now and then watching the sim morph into what it will become. Mystery 201,187,24.
You can tp easily from there to venues in the sim Take a trip to Scylla to see their other shops not in the mystery sim .You do not want to miss any of them. Scylla 142, 161, 61 .

Eggscellent!

EggsActly Island could become one gigantic omelet if there were an earthquake!
There are Easter Eggs on every nook and crannie of the island. In fact there have been so many submissions to the Bunny jam Egg Decorating Contest sponsored by the Linden Lab that Mia Linden had to build another island nearby to hold them all.
There is a riot of color and shapes of eggs for your viewing. It is amazing to see the creativity of the submissions collected in one place. There will be a judging by impartial judges during the week of April 11-17.
Three winners will be selected but I am glad I am not a judge! It will not be easy!
While you are on the main island you can complete a short survey for a prize. What a prize!
A full region for one year will be yours if you are randomly selected (Tax implications ::read the fine print ).
You will find the entry platform at EggsActly 48, 193,24

The Yamato

by Bixyl Shuftan

One of my friends in Second Life told me about something interesting. She mentioned the location of a replica of the battleship Yamato. So when I had a moment, I ported there and looked around.

The sim’s most prominent feature is of course the Imperial Japanese battleship Yamato. This behemoth stretches from one end of the sim to the other. I had to alter my Preferences to get the whole thing to rezz on my screen. The ship was done to great detail, it’s turrets and massive cannons, It’s row upon row of anti-aircraft guns and smaller anti-ship guns, the Imperial symbol at the bow of the ship, etc. There is a bridge one can get to as well. In the stern of the ship is a rezzable seaplane on a catapult, which can either be for normal-sized avatars or tinies. Getting in, the plane will launch and automatically fly around, after a while landing on a building in the city block nearby.

Work appears to still be going on inside the ship for additional detail. An accidental cam around showed in the interior floors ladders, and doors, as well as a display of several black & white photographs of the Yamato. There did not seem to be a door that opened to the interior.

The sim the Yamato is docked in is just one of several in the area. Just north of the battleship is open water with a few smaller ships. One has a working anti-aircraft gun which can be mounted and fired. North of that is an Imperial Japanese carrier, the Akaki. There, one can rezz a Zero fighter and fly it, either in expert or novice mode. A couple residents could do some sparring here in a ship vs plane fight. The Zero will remain, even if you land, until you leave the plane.

The real Yamato was one of two of the largest and heaviest battleships ever built, (the other being her less famous sister ship Musashi) and her nine 18.1 inch (40 cm) main guns were the largest ever fitted on a warship. The ship was formally commissioned a week after Japan declared war on the U.S. She was soon made the flagship of the Combined Fleet, and was part of a number of operations, until it was sent on a one-way mission to defend Okinawa on March 29, 1945. On April 7, the Yamato was attacked by U.S. aircraft, and after taking numerous torpedo and bomb hits, the ship sunk with the loss of 2498 of about 2700 crew. Japan had too few ships after the battle to launch another major operation for the rest of the war.

The Yamato in Second Life is at: Yamato of Japan, (162, 189, 27)
